Goodwill Excel Center Midsouth (the “Excel Center”), located in Memphis, Tennessee, is a contract adult high school operating in partnership with Shelby County Schools (“SCS”). The Excel Center opened its doors in 2015 and provides adults 18 and older with the opportunity to earn a free high school diploma. In addition, students have opportunities to explore post-secondary education while developing career paths in their local economy.
The school’s goal is for its students to attain better-than-average employment, growth opportunities and industry-recognized certifications or licenses. Targeted licenses and certifications for its students include OSHA-10, Pharmacy Technician, Commercial Driver’s Licensing, Forklift Operations and Cosmetology among others. Students also receive support services, including free childcare, certified life coaches, accelerated courses and transportation assistance.
Southern Community Capital’s New Market Tax Credit investment was used to acquire a 30,140 square-foot commercial building and finance the expansion of operations to support the Excel Center’s growing educational programs. This project helps enhance the Excel Center’s capacity to continuously expand its market-relevant certification and apprenticeship programs and attract current and future students while providing them with in-demand occupational skills for quality employment.
