Phone Scams

 

Phone scammers often pose as tech support companies, banks or charitable organizations to try to get you to divulge your sensitive financial information. Verify the caller before giving away your information.

Check fraud
Checks can be stolen through the mail and:

  • the amount can be altered
  • the signature can be forged
  • key information can be replaced through check washing

Debit and credit cards
Debit and credit cards can be stolen through the mail. Card information can also be stolen:

  • online when using suspicious or unsecure websites
  • through skimmers, which are devices criminals install on card readers to capture financial information
  • when consumers give their information to an unverified source, such as someone posing as a bank, charitable organization, utility company, etc.

Signs that your identity may have been stolen

 

Take action if you become aware of any of the following signs of fraudulent activity:

 

  • You are no longer receiving your billing or account statements.
  • Suspicious/unauthorized charges appear on your accounts.
  • You receive bills/statements for new loans or accounts for which you did not apply.
  • Accounts that you did not request or open appear on your credit report.
  • You are denied credit even though you have a good credit history.
  • Unauthorized withdrawals are made on your bank accounts.
