The American Cancer Society, Inc., is a non-profit corporation headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

The Mississippi Hope Lodge project included two structures: the Hope Lodge Community Center, that provides free overnight lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers, and a parking area for Hope Lodge guests, volunteers and staff.

The project is located in the defined “healthcare corridor” of Jackson, Mississippi and will influence the development of additional systems in the area that will not only provide healthcare, but also develop infrastructure, create employment and drive economic growth to the local area. This project is the first new construction within this corridor, allowing it to serve as a springboard for future similar developments.

Project Impact

  • 12 direct full-time jobs were created with this project
  • The project also provides nearly 12,000 nights of free lodging each year to patients traveling to the Jackson area to receive outpatient treatment; the fair market value of this lodging is approximately $1.34 million per year
  • Other free services, such as transportation to and from treatment facilities, are also provided to Hope Lodge guests
